Every couple goes through relationship problems and conflict. These challenges may be about a specific event or involve ongoing negative patterns. The stress, frustration and uncertainty that comes with these times can make it difficult for couples to work together toward a solution that is works for everyone. I help couples find these solutions by working with them collaboratively and teaching skills to learn how to become better at navigating through conflict.
I can help with couples many different areas, including:
In my experience working with couples, I have found that relationships improve most when provided with a balance of emotional support and a set of practical tools. I am trained in Pragmatic-Experiential Therapy for couples (PEX) to help my clients experience better communication, understanding, connectedness and problem-solving.
PEX is an empirically verified therapy that centers on teaching couples a “core set of emotional habits that are so powerfully positive that, when people have them, they end up having satisfying long-term relationships over 90% of the time.” It helps couples develop better skills for being in a healthy and happy relationship by learning how to work together more effectively. We will work together to find a balance between being an individual as well as the togetherness of being a couple.
“Every relationship needs to be continually negotiated”
Individual counselling can be powerful when you are ready to learn more about yourself and take steps to creating changes in your life.
You may not even know what these changes are yet, but what you know is something does not feel quite right. You may be feeling hopeless or self-critical. You may be feeling anxious or constantly worrying. You may be having relationship problems at work or at home. You may be feeling exhausted, down or stuck.
You also may be going through a major transition in your life (career, relationship, experiencing a child, grief, break-up, etc.) and want to give yourself an opportunity to figure out what you really want and need.
Counselling can help you deepen the understanding of yourself and learn new tools and strategies, so you can identify your needs with clarity, experience relief from unwanted thoughts, and ultimately feel healthier from the inside-out.
The years of being a child and teenager are filled with exciting experiences; yet, this time may be a trying developmental stage. Children take on complex tasks and experiences for the first time, and frequently discover they lack the skills to navigate them.
With over 30 years of experience in the classroom grades kindergarten to grade 12, and years of experience with children and families in the school system as a Registered Psychologist, I have a warm connection with children and teens while creating a partnership filled with support, compassion and empathy. I help children acquire the skills and abilities to flourish in their homes, schools and social environments. Children often don’t have the tools and resources of an adult, so I use specialized children’s therapies including Sand Tray Therapy, Art Therapy, Play Therapy and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). I also work closely with parents to provide coaching and new tools to handle parenting difficulties they encounter.
I have helped children and teens identify and communicate feelings, develop decision making skills and problem solving, reduce depression and anxiety, improve self-esteem and acquire healthy coping strategies. I have also helped families work more efficiently and cohesively to express themselves, understand their child better, strengthen relationships, and develop healthy strategies to decrease conflict in the family. Additionally, I am able to guide, support, and provide structure to parents in co-parenting relationships as well as parents navigating the delicate territory of blending families.
